GAME 1:
Cougars Softball dropped a close 12-10 decision to Corning CC on Sunday, despite out-hitting their opponents 12 to 11. Genesee mounted a late-game surge in the seventh inning, scoring five runs on six hits, but the comeback fell just short.
The offensive effort was led by Ryan, Scharfen, Wells, and Van Der Jagt, who each recorded two hits. Ryan, Van Der Jagt, and Crowley also drove in two runs apiece. On the base paths, the Cougars remained aggressive with four stolen bases, including two from Van Der Jagt.
Fronterhouse started on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings of work. While Genesee's lineup showed great discipline and power throughout the game, Corning's early lead proved enough to hold off the Cougars' final rally.
GAME 2:
The Cougars lost a high-scoring 14-13 battle to Corning in their second game on Sunday in a game that came down to the final play. Despite Genesee out-hitting Corning 19 to 10, a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning secured the walk-off victory for the home team.
The Cougars' offense was relentless, led by Scharfen and Fronterhouse, who each recorded four hits and two RBIs. Hibbs and Wells also drove in two runs apiece, while O'Connell, Van Der Jagt, and Crowley all contributed multiple hits. Genesee held the lead several times, including a 13-12 advantage heading into the final frame, but couldn't quite hold off Corning's late surge.
On the mound, Scharfen started the game and Fronterhouse provided over four innings of relief. While the result wasn't what the Cougars hoped for, the game showcased the depth of the lineup and their aggressiveness on the base paths.
Genesee will look to bounce back when they travel to SUNY Niagara this Tuesday, April 28th.
