Genesee Swimming and Diving to Compete at National Championships

The GCC men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championships this week at host site Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, FL. The Cougars will send nine student-athletes, five men and four women, to the four-day event which begins on March 2nd and runs through March 5th.

The swimmers making the trip are Lyle Wagner, Jason Woerner, Kyle Podlaski, Denzel Flowers, Thomas Richardson, Islelie Silvanie, Miranda Dunton, Heather Farrell and MiKenna Carpenter.

Podlaski is coming off of a pair of individual titles at the Region III championships and will compete against the best in the NJCAA in the 400 IM and the 200 backstroke. He will also swim in the 1000 free and 500 free.

Wagner, the Region III title holder in the 200 butterfly, will be seeded seventh in the event at nationals in addition to competing in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 100 IM.

Woerner will take aim at four individual events, swimming in the 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast and 100 free.

Richardson will swim the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 100 breast and Flowers will compete in two individual swims, racing in the 1000 free and 1650 free.

The men will also combine to swim in four relays, taking part in the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free, and 400 medley.

The women placed in the top three in all but two events at the Region III championships, including an individual win by Silvanie in the 100 backstroke. She will swim the race at nationals as the eighth seed and also compete in the 50 breast, 100 butterfly and 100 IM.

Dunton will take part in four individual races, taking aim at the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free. Carpenter and Farrell will also compete in four individual events apiece. Carpenter is part of the 50 free, 100 free, 50 butterfly and 100 breast and Farrell will swim the 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 back and 200 back.

The women will also team up to swim in four relays, competing in the 200 and 400 medleys and 200 and 400 frees.

Events are divided up and scheduled throughout the four days of competition. Preliminaries will begin each day at 9:30 a.m. and finals will swim on the same day beginning at 5:30 p.m.
