For the second year in a row and fifth time in the last six years, the GCC men's lacrosse team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Final Four after Genesee defeated Howard CC (MD) in the opening round play-in game on Saturday afternoon, 19-9.
Davis Prince tallied 10 points for the No. 4 nationally ranked Cougars, scoring four goals and assisting on six.
After both teams found the back of the net three times apiece in the opening quarter, GCC outscored HCC 8-1 in the second to take an 11-4 lead into the half and held off the Dragons by an 8-5 margin in the second half.
Darin Eakins made 16 saves in net to earn the win in a complete game effort, his 11th win in goal this season.
Pat Van Bortle scored six goals on the afternoon and also assisted on one, Jacob Bomberry finished with six points, three goals and three assists, and Sherman Williams and John Jimerson each scored two goals apiece. Jonah Mohawk and Reed Hnidy also added a goal each. Hnidy led the Cougars with 14 ground balls
Mike Caternolo was 19 of 30 on face-offs and also collected seven ground balls.
Genesee (13-4) will travel to final four host site Onondaga CC on Saturday to play No. 1 nationally ranked Nassau CC at noon. The Cougars lost to the Lions 10-7 in their only meeting of the year on Apr. 9 at GCC.
