The No. 4 nationally-ranked GCC men's lacrosse team ended its regular season with a 28-0 shutout win over visiting Herkimer College on Saturday afternoon, marking the first time the Cougars have held an opponent scoreless this season.
Jacob Bomberry recorded a first quarter hat trick, helping GCC to nine goals in the opening frame.
The Cougars converted five man-up goals throughout the afternoon and also added one while a man down. Genesee successfully killed off all eight penalties called against them in the game.
GCC led 16-0 at the half, 22-0 after three and finished with six goals in the final quarter.
Davis Prince led the offense with nine points, scoring six goals and assisting on three. Bomberry finished with four goals and two assists, Pat Van Bortle added four assists and three goals, Sherman Williams scored four goals and had two assists and Colin Brillian and Vern Hill scored three goals apiece.
Mike Caternolo went 25 for 30 on face-offs and collected 17 ground balls. He also assisted on a goal. Reed Hnidy led the defense with 12 ground balls and four caused turnovers, Bailey Skye collected five ground balls and had three takeaways and also scored once.
Darin Eakins earned the shutout win in net, stopping all four shots he faced in a complete game effort.
Genesee (11-3) will now move on to the regional playoffs which will be held at Onondaga CC on Apr. 30 and May 1. Opponent and game time is to be announced.
