The No. 4 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team could not get past No. 1 Onondaga Community College on Saturday afternoon, falling in the semifinals of the Region III playoffs, 18-6.
The Cougars took the lead with a man advantage when Dana Ray scored to make it 1-0 GCC. The Lazers responded after returning to full strength to tie it at one less than a minute later, but Doug Ellsworth put Genesee back in front with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 early in the first quarter.
OCC then scored two straight and held a 3-2 lead after one.
Both teams traded a goal to begin the second quarter before Onondaga rattled off five in a row to take a 9-3 lead. GCC ended the half scoring the final two goals, one from Jimmy Smith and one from Ray, and trailed 9-5 at the half.
OCC opened things up in the third quarter and outscored GCC 8-0 to take control. Both teams managed only one fourth quarter goal and Onondaga defeated Genesee for the second time this season.
Genesee ends the season 6-9 and will await the possibility of an at-large bid for the NJCAA National Tournament.
