The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team made the most of home field advantage on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Jefferson Community College in the quarterfinals of the Region III playoffs 19-11 to advance to the regional semis this weekend.
Ahead 6-3 to start the second, GCC surrendered four straight goals to Jefferson and fell behind 7-6 halfway through the quarter.
Genesee responded by netting the final two goals of the half, with Ray scoring his second and Doug Ellsworth adding one, to take an 8-7 lead into halftime.
Ray and Ellsworth scored again back-to-back to begin the second half and Genesee took a 10-7 lead five minutes in.
The Cannoneers scored their lone third quarter goal at the 9:12 mark before GCC rattled off three in a row, including two goals from Joshua Wester, to take a 13-8 lead into the fourth.
Gray answered an early JCC goal with his second of the game at the 10:35 mark of the final quarter, and the Cougars outscored Jefferson 5-2 the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Ray finished the afternoon with six goals and an assist, Wester had six assists and four goals and Gray added two goals.
Pete DiLaura won seven face-offs, had six ground balls and four caused turnovers and Skowronski and Doug Ellsworth each collected four ground balls.
Craig Seneca made 12 saves in net.
Genesee will be re-seeded before this weekend's Region III Semifinals, hosted by Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Opponent and game time is TBA.
