The no. 3 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2014 season with a win at home on Thursday afternoon, defeating Jefferson Community College 16-3.
The Cannoneers took an early 1-0 lead just two-minutes into the first quarter, but Tyler Skowronski quickly tied the game for Genesee with his first goal of the year just 1:30 later.
GCC began the second half successfully killing off one of its two penalties on the afternoon and went up 9-1 shortly after returning to full-strength when Robert Kitchen found the back of the net. Jefferson then ended a nearly 33-minute scoring drought with a goal at the 9:42 mark of the third quarter to get to within 9-2.
The Cougars finished the game scoring seven out of the last eight goals, including a man-up goal late in the fourth quarter, to roll to the victory.
Skowronski ended the afternoon with four goals and four ground balls. DiLaura finished with a goal and seven ground balls and also won four face-offs. Gray won four face-offs, Johnny Astrologo collected four ground balls and forced three turnovers and Wester scored two goals.
Craig Seneca played three quarters in net for GCC and made seven saves, allowing just one goal. Mark Pucek played the final quarter and made three saves.
Genesee (1-0) will return to action at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. against SUNY Delhi.
