Genesee Community College and beloved mascot, "G-DUB," are part of the 2nd annual "SUNY Mascot Madness," which matches SUNY schools and mascots up with one another in a bracket-style competition modeled after the college basketball tournaments that take place each March.
Genesee will represent one of 43 SUNY campuses, 650 athletic teams and over 360,000 students in this year's competition.
The Cougars are the no. 29 seed and will square off against no. 36 seed Alfred State College. Seed rankings are based on the number of teams that a particular campus represents and then enrollment data is used to break any ties.
"Mascot Madness is an exciting opportunity to bring together students, alumni, and community members in the name of SUNY campus pride. It's truly amazing how our social media efforts have helped to unite the SUNY system through this and many other campaigns throughout the year," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "Good luck to all of this year's competitors!"
Voting is conducted via social media and voters must follow SUNY on Twitter (@SUNY) or "like" them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/generationsuny) for instructions to vote. Each person is allowed one vote per 72 hours, per round.
The contest is based on a standard single-elimination bracket of four divisions with five rounds. Round one voting will begin at 12:00pm on Tuesday, March 11 and run until Tuesday, March 18 at 9:00pm. The competition and final round voting will conclude on Tuesday, April 3 at 12:00pm.
