The third-ranked Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team will begin its 2014 campaign on Thursday when the Cougars host Jefferson Community College in the first regular season game of the year. The game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was moved to Thursday due to expected weather conditions.
Coming off of its third straight appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Final Four, Genesee will return 15 players from last year's squad and attempt to win the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) title for the third consecutive season.
Ranked as high as no. 2 last season, the Cougars won a school-record tying 15 games including an 8-1 record at home and a 4-0 WNYAC record. GCC netted an average of 15.28 goals per game in 2013, the third highest average in the country.
Genesee competed in three scrimmages this winter against SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Brockport and SUNY Buffalo leading up to the start of the regular season.
Jefferson CC went 2-9 a year ago and the Cannoneers will make the trip to Genesee for the first time since the 2011 season.
Wednesday will mark the first of six home games for GCC and face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
