Both Genesee Community College soccer teams will host Region-III home semifinal contests tomorrow, Oct. 25. The No. 5 GCC women's team will host Broome Community College at 4 p.m., while the No. 3 GCC men's team will host Mohawk Valley Community College at 6:30 p.m., with both games being live-streamed.
Winners of those contests will compete for a region championship and national championship berth this weekend at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Since both GCC soccer teams wear white uniforms at home, to help support the team the athletics department is asking fans to also wear white in a show of solidarity and Cougar pride. Those students in attendance that wear white clothing will receive free hot dogs with student identification.
The matchups were finalized last night after Mohawk Valley beat Hudson Valley in overtime and won the right to face the No. 3 GCC men's team. The two clubs met in the Cougars' season opener with Genesee taking the road contest 6-1 on Sept. 1. In that game, current National Junior College Athletic Association D-III leading scorer Rodrigo Albuquerque was in on five of the six Cougar goals with three goals and two assists. Mohawk's leading scorer Isaak Somow had the Hawks' lone goal.
In the women's matchup, the No. 5 GCC women's team will have a familiar opponent in Broome. The two teams just met this past weekend with a 4-0 Cougars win. In that contest, Miko Yamashita was in on all four Cougar goals with a pair of goals and pair of assists. NJCAA Region III selected her as one of its athletes of the week yesterday for that performance and the previous one where she scored both the team's game winning goals. Defensively, the recent 4-0 win over Broome was one of six-consecutive shutout wins and extended Jaclyn Guzdek's shutout streak to 551 minutes as she leads NJCAA D-III goalkeepers in clean sheets with a dozen.
