Rowland and Albuquerque Give Cougars Most Weekly Honors Nationally

Rowland and Albuquerque

Genesee Community College student athletes Lyndsey Rowland and Rodrigo Albuquerque both were named National Junior College Athletic Association Players of the Week Wednesday afternoon for their performances through Sept. 30.

Rowland was named NJCAA D-III Defensive Volleyball Player of the Week and Albuquerque garnered NJCAA D-III Men's Soccer Player of the Week.

It was the second-consecutive week two Cougars captured national player of week honors and brought the total national acknowledgments on the year to six for contests played from the start of the 2018 fall season.

Of all the Division-III three schools that compete with Genesee, the six overall Genesee national acknowledgements are more than twice as many as any other junior college that competes in the same sports as Genesee does collectively.

Each fall sport that Genesee participates in has named 10 national honorees through the first five weeks of the season. In men's and women's soccer, each sport receives a player of the week and goalkeeper of the week, while in volleyball the distribution  is between offensive and defensive player of the week. To date, among the three sports 30 selections have been made nationally (two per sport X three sports X five weeks).

In volleyball, Rowland joined Ana Carolina Cerezer Pinto from the Cougar roster as two of those 10 selections in volleyball over the past five weeks. The two Genesee selections are tied for the most volleyball selections in Division-III from any school with Eastfield and Columbus State.

In women's soccer, Jaclyn Guzdek was tabbed as the top national goalkeeper last week and Katline Cartwright as the top player two weeks ago. Those two Cougar selections were tied for the most women's soccer selections in Division-III with Hudson Valley.

In men's soccer, Albuquerque is the only back-to-back national winner from any of the three sports Genesee participates in. His two selections were tied for the most by any team in Division-III with Herkimer.

The success of the Cougar athletes has led GCC to a collective record in the three sports of 31-9 so far this season with more than half of the nine losses to nationally-ranked opponents.
