The Genesee Community College's athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 29 are Angel Priest (Willemstad, Curacao) from the women's swimming team and Brian Fobbs (Rochetser, NY) from the men's basketball team.
Angel won three 200-yard swimming events in propelling Genesee to first place at the Herkimer County Community College Invitational against Jamestown and host Herkimer last week. Angel won the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke. With only a dozen points separating all three schools in competition, her wins provided the points that were the difference in securing the win for the Cougars.
Brian became just the 12th player in Genesee Community College history to score 1,000 career points and he accomplished that last week during his 29-point performance against Niagara. And to put an exclamation point on the historic event, he sank a three at the buzzer to give Genesee a huge WNYAC win. Brian scored a combined 60 points last week in his two games and after the latter contest moved into the GCC all-time top-10. In addition, he combined for 22 rebounds and eight assists as he continues to lead the nation at NJCAA D-II statistics for points and rebounds per game. In addition to being the GCC Male Athlete of the Week, he was also selected as the NJCAA Region III Male Athlete of the Week as well for his aforementioned accomplishments.
